Big Days have long held an allure

for birders wishing to challenge themselves in tests of skill, expertise,
and endurance. Finding and identifying a large number of species in a single day within a state or a
county requires keen knowledge of the region's bird life across time and space. Drawing together
knowledge on seasonality, behavior, biogeography, habitat, and the idiosyncrasies of particular locations
to design a route that can maximize the number of species encountered in 24 hours is a formidable task
of logistical planning.
Oregon has a rich history of big days. A number of teams have surpassed 200 species in statewide big
days, and birders have put forth solid efforts in most of Oregon's 36 counties. Birders have also devised
variations on the big day theme, including big sits, regional birdathon trips, 48-hour adventures, and - in response to climate change -motorless big days that minimize the use of fossil fuels.
